在3GPP中GERAN Iu mode指的是什么

我的理解如下：
GERAN（GSM EDGE Radio Access Network）
UTRAN （Universal Terrestrial Raido Access Network）
GAN (Generic Access Network)

GERAN A/Gb mode, GERAN Iu mode 与UTRAN Iu mode的区别

GERAN和UTRAN是两个采用不同RAT（Radio Access Technology）的接入网。

GERAN可能通过A/Gb接口连接到2G核心网（Core Network，CN），或者通过Iu接口连接到3G核心网；而UTRAN只能通过Iu接口连接到3G核心网。
所以，在3GPP中，通过GERAN A/Gb mode和GERAN Iu mode来区分在GERAN中工作的不同模式；通过GERAN Iu mode和UTRAN Iu mode来区分通过不同接入网接入到3G核心网的工作模式。


关于这个术语，曾经在3GPP中造成一定的confusion。后来由Vodafone公司在2001年6月份在美国召开的GERAN#5会议上，发送联络函（LS）给RAN、SA和CT等工作组，来澄清这个问题。具体情况可参考GP-011437：LS on terminology clarifications。

GAN (Generic Access Network )
Generic Access Network 是一个扩展移动语音、数据和IMS/SIP over IP的通信系统。Unlicensed Mobile Access （UMA）是其用于marking的比较商业化的名字。

UMA was developed by a group of operator and vendor companies.The initial specifications were published on 2 September 2004. The companies then contributed the specifications to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) as part of 3GPP work item "Generic Access to A/Gb interfaces". On 8 April 2005, 3GPP approved specifications for Generic Access to A/Gb interfaces for 3GPP Release 6 (TS 43.318 and TS 44.318) and renamed the system to GAN. But the term GAN is little known outside the 3GPP community, and the term UMA is more common in marketing.

其实一直认为BSC只走Gb的，怎么Iu-ps也可以呢？

关于GERAN的网络描述，可参考3GPP TS 43.051（Rel-8、Rel-9或者Rel-10）；关于GERAN参考架构图也可在该规范 section 4.1中找到。
