When an GPRS Update Location failed or was not accepted by the HLR, a Purge MS procedure is initiated. The Purge MS procedure is initiated by the SGSN to inform the HLR that it is about to remove a MS.

If the SGSN is running out of memory, the subscriber data record for the MS that has been detached longest is removed from the SGSN. The SGSN informs the HLR (purgeMS is sent to the HLR) in order to free memory for attaching MSs. This procedure is also triggered when the operator removes a subscriber from the SGSN.
